MARLBOROUGH VINEYARDS

Wairau Vineyard

As New Zealand’s wine capital, Marlborough produces over 60% of the country’s wine. Our mature vineyards are located just north of the town of Blenheim in Marlborough, near the top of the South Island of New Zealand.

Poised at the edge of the Wairau Valley, the St. Lukes vineyards at Spring Creek Creek and Grovetown were selected many years ago because they were situated in a unique microclimate that features natural water springs and sedimentary soils rich with nutrients. Despite having New Zealand’s highest number of sunshine hours, the region benefits from climate fluctuations and ample rainfall, making it a truly cool climate that’s quite favorable to grape growing.

In these ideal climate conditions, grapes enjoy the advantage of a long, slow, flavour-intensifying period—perfect conditions for ripening. What’s more, the broad variations in day and night temperatures enable Spring Creek grapes to retain both fresh, vibrant fruit and crisp characters.

Awatere Vineyard

Further south from Blenheim, is the tiny town of Seddon (Marlborough) in the Awatere Valley, where it is cooler, drier, and perhaps even more magnificent than the Wairau Valley. One of the fastest-growing wine areas in the country, St Lukes has secured 1000-acre land holdings in the Awatere Valley, where the first plantings were made just over 20 years ago in 1986.

The development initiatives at this vineyard are spectacular, including the company's own dam and lakes, which ensure high-quality irrigation. In conjunction with 35 other properties, we have established an intensive irrigation system spanning 3500 acres. Known as the Blind River Scheme, it has become one of the showcase developments in New Zealand, and it required no government financing or involvement.

St Lukes believe this expansive development project in the Awatere Valley is a sound investment of resources, especially given the valley’s capacity to deliver another style and progression of Sauvignon Blanc.
